Freemasonry: More Than Just a Secret Society
Freemasonry is often labeled as a "secret society," but that description doesn't capture the reality. It might be more accurate to call it a "society with secrets."
Think about this: many organizations have information that isn't public knowledge. Even a company boardroom discussions are "secret" in the sense they don’t want to share that with employees, competitors or, others not involved. But that doesn't make the company a cult.
Similarly, Freemasonry has internal practices and symbols that are for members, but its overall purpose and activities are not inherently secretive.

One reason for Freemasonry's historical secrecy stems from self-preservation. Secrecy provided a degree of protection, allowing members to meet and discuss ideas openly without fear of persecution. Imagine certain kingdoms or religions knowing that men of different backgrounds are meeting, discussing art, politics, and having open conversations that do not cause conflict but rather; create open dialogue.
It's also important to remember that Freemasonry has a strong public presence. Lodges often host open houses or public events. Local lodges participate in community service and support charitable causes. These actions demonstrate that Freemasonry does not hide from the world but contributes to it.
A core focus of Freemasonry is the development of individual character. Through its teachings and symbolism, Freemasonry encourages members to live ethical lives, act with integrity, and cultivate virtues like honesty, temperance, and fortitude.
The study of philosophy, religious thought, and spirituality within the Lodge helps members explore their own beliefs and values, fostering personal growth and a broader understanding of the world. Freemasonry is not a religion so it is not in lieu of religion or replacing it. In fact, it may strengthen ones divine faith.
The symbols used in Freemasonry, while not fully explained to the public, are not meant to be mysterious for the sake of mystery. They serve as visual aids for teaching moral lessons and conveying philosophical concepts. Like a company's logo represents its brand and values, Masonic symbols represent the fraternity's teachings and history.
While Freemasonry has its share of internal traditions, it's a far cry from YouTube conspiracy videos or the stereotypical "secret society." It's a fraternity that emphasizes personal growth, ethical conduct, and community involvement, with a rich history and enduring relevance.
