Masonic Mysteries - A Look Inside the Masonic Lodge
Freemasonry often sparks images of secret handshakes and hidden meanings. While it is rich in tradition and symbolism, the reality of a modern Masonic lodge like Solomon's Staircase Lodge in Buena Park, CA is far more grounded in personal growth, community engagement, and practical fellowship.
So, what actually happens behind the lodge doors?
The first gathering of the month is known as a "stated meeting," which is typically business (only). It includes communications, managing finances, upcoming events, remembrance of those who have passed on and keeping up-to-date with upcoming events.
Other meetings of the month, include ritual, award recognition and rehearsing our degree work. Masonic education is also part of this. Education is key - Many meetings feature presentations or discussions on Masonic history, philosophy, symbolism, or leadership, offering members intellectual stimulation and tools for self-improvement. It’s a forum for learning and respectful debate.
Far from spooky initiations, these are structured, symbolic presentations...

Another vital activity is welcoming those interested in Freemasonry. These are known as prospects. Without new members, the lodge will become stagnant and perhaps close their doors. Solomon's Staircase often suggests that prospects visit several times to learn more about Masonry, what is done, and learn more about the members. Plus, they may meet more members who they didn't see the first visit.
After a prospect submits and application, they are able to obtain their first degree, Entered Apprentice. Blue Lodges confer a total of three degree ceremonies. Far from spooky initiations, these are structured, symbolic presentations that use allegory and historical narratives to teach core Masonic virtues like integrity, equality, compassion, and the importance of truth. It’s less about secrets and more about a shared journey of understanding these principles and cardinal virtues.
Fellowship is also important with lodge activities. This includes events with spouses and family. Not all meetings take place behind closed doors. Masons like Solomon's Staircase are very active in their community. Read more in the About website page.
Before or after meetings, members often share meals or conversations, strengthening bonds and building a supportive network. Solomon’s Staircase Lodge isn’t just a building; it's a community of men dedicated to improving themselves and positively impacting the world around them. It’s about structured learning, organized charity, and genuine connection – no smoke and mirrors required, just a commitment to growth and community service.
